Dew in the Garden of Grace

My husband laughs at my inquisitive mind.  He says I ask too many questions!  Like a curious kid, I continue to live in a world filled with wonder.  I bring this fascination into the secret garden.  It is my favorite place to pour out my heart’s desires and desperations. Where is this sacred spot?  Why, you can join me there anytime.  It is found every time we open the inspired Word of God.  Shall we go now and seek our Savior’s wisdom?

What About Dew?

Today I asked Jesus about dew.  Seldom is our interest drawn to mist upon the ground.  It just appears in the morning and disappears when the sun smiles upon the earth.  It is more common to talk about the rain.  Rain is more impactful, but maybe not.  I’ve read that dew is a major water source for plants, and it forms more that rain.  Dew helps plants regulate their water, increase their biomass, and speed up their metabolism. Therefore, dew holds its place of importance.  So important that the Holy Spirit chose it to describe our Savior.

I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled. For my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. (Song. of Sol. 5:2)

The allegory in Song of Solomon clearly paints a picture of Jesus and His bride, the church.  While sleeping, Jesus knocks on our hearts.  Whether we slumber in unbelief, sorrow, sickness or loneliness, our Savior appears.  As we gaze at Him, His head is filled with dew.  His hair is even dripping with the night’s moisture!  It doesn’t mean Jesus is sweaty, but He is our lead, the head of the church, covering us like dew with His righteousness.  This is our Savior who opens His garden’s door and answers us when our hearts begin to wither.

The Garden Door is Open

My beloved put his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.

I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. I opened to my beloved: (Song. of Songs 5:4-5)

Jesus puts His hand at the latch of the door for which our hearts yearn for His love.  The handles of the lock drip with myrrh; the bitterness resulting from His crucifixion. He has opened the door to the Father’s Kingdom.  As we read on, Jesus is busy gathering us, the fragile lilies.

My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies. (Song. of Sol. 6:2)

Healing in the Garden

Even if you are backsliding into a mudpuddle of problems, Jesus will pull you out.  He will follow you and refresh you like a lily needing water.

I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for mine anger is turned away from him.  I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast for his roots as Lebanon. (Hosea 14:4-5)

Taking Care of Lilies

Next time you see dew, ponder its prominence. Dew takes care of the lily.  We know there is no care or worry in the wardrobe of the flower.  The lily waits for the covering of the dew to rescue and revive it.  Now rest in this Garden of Grace, where your beloved is tending to your withering heart.

I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies. (Song. of Sol. 6:3)

Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (Lk. 12:27)

  1. This gives a great new perspective on how Jesus covers us with his love, grace, wisdom and healing. I like the visual you’ve provided. Thank you!

    • Emily, you are absolutely right. The dew representing Christ tends to every need we have. Without our realization, Jesus revives us. When we look at a lily we can see how the Lord loves and imparts life into us. He knows exactly what we need and how much. Daily, Jesus will dose us with gentle dew drops that won’t drown or dry us up.
