Wandering this earth is sure to weary your soul. Even great prophets like Elijah wished to die when the world’s pressures pounded against his mind.
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 1 Kings 19:4
Too often society’s solutions overtake the soul. Watching sin’s destructive force, carnality bends to drink from the wrong stream. Shaving the edge off stress through strong drink, the Holy Spirit is grieved.
Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that thy may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! Isaiah 5:11
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30
Difficult to sense the Father, a fog descends and dispenses depression. Sitting alone in the parched room of your heart, you search. Where did joy go? Remorse drops a weight onto your mind. Wrong decisions have drained God’s peace into dry holes.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. Lamentations 3:26-28
Despising the distance drinking has caused, you begin to sob. Desperation alerts angels. Spiritual agents send reminders to partake from the river of life. Discreetly, they slip messages along the street in your soul. Scriptures are seen during the day and in dreams at night.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 1 Kings 19:5-8
The Spirit wakens your soul to repentance.
Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. Joel 1:5
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightiest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hath broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit. Psalm 51: 1-12
Like feathers tickling your toes, laughter returns. Smiling from Heaven is your Father. His Son has brought you home.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:11
Oh how God refreshes the empty goblet of your heart. His grace shatters the glass of ungodliness and fills your mouth with goodness. Only wine from the chalice of Christ can send away your blues.
I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. Psalm 81:10
Conclusion
Where do you go when life disappoints, and dreams die? A wishing well filled with wine is not the place where penny’s drop and promises come true. To the water of the Word you must go. Sit quietly and wait for His whisper. His wisdom is worth more than money spent on meaningless drink. As He opens your mind with understanding, you will meet living waters. So, when worn down by the world, wander into the Word where Jesus pours joy back into your soul.
